She also teamed up with Japanese pearl company TASAKI for a collaboration. The collection is mostly her signature sliced up pearls style, with classic designs as well as some new additions.

There is a link to this video buried in a post about New York Fashion Week Day 2, but I wanted to highlight it because it’s so good. If you ever wanted to know what an exceptional jewelry film looks like, watch this. You get a great look at the jewelry and feel for the collection, the musical selection is perfect; it’s just plain fun to watch. Bravo, Rebecca Minkoff (and blogger Leandra Medine aka The Man Repeller).

Patricia Madeja Reversible Spinning Stone Bracelet

You would be forgiven for thinking that Patricia Madeja had an engineering/architectural background. She was accepted to the Pratt Institute’s School of Architecture, but fortunately for jewelry lovers she took the offer of admission to Pratt’s School of Art & Design instead. After finding her way to a jewelry class, where her detail-oriented nature shone, she stuck with it and established a studio in 1989. Since then, she has won numerous design awards and has also returned to her alma mater to teach and advise.

For Wallpaper* magazine’s annual ‘Handmade’ issue, a collaboration was undertaken with Harry Winston’s artisans and industrial designer Stephen Burks for a very unique jewelry box. The 2013 spring auction season is under way and there are likely to be a number of  price records broken.

28.86 carat D-color, flawless diamond sold by Sotheby’s on April 8 in Hong Kong.

The first record has already fallen with the sale of a D-color, flawless, 28.86 carat round diamond at the Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite sale by Sotheby’s on April 8 in Hong Kong. With a hammer price of US$6.9 million, a new record for price per carat of a white round diamond has been set at $239,352.

74.79 carat D-color, VVSI diamond offered by Sotheby’s on April 17 in New York.

Sotheby’s is also holding a Magnificent Jewels sale in New York on April 17 and one in Geneva on May 14. The New York sale is led by a pear-shaped 74.79 carat D-color, VVSI white diamond and also features a number of other large diamonds.  The Geneva sale will include the Gina Lollobrigida Bulgari jewels that I wrote about previously, as well as a number of other notable pieces such as a 75 carat yellow diamond and a flawless, D-color, cushion-cut 27.90 carat white diamond.

A Bejeweled Science Experiment by Hubert Duprat

Hubert Duprat’s Caddis Fly Larvae Art

I was alerted to the very interesting artist Hubert Duprat via jeweler Frances Wadsworth-Jones (whom I will be posting about in the near future). Duprat has been experimenting with caddis fly larvae, a small winged insect related to the butterfly, who build protective cases out of found objects such as grains of sand, plant material and bits of shell that are held together by the silk it spins. Working with the insect since the 1980s, an encounter with people panning for gold led him to trying to put the larvae into a controlled environment where their found objects would be pieces of gold, precious and semi-precious stones. Sure enough, the items were used to build the cases, and you can see a video below of the action. I’m not sure of the long term viability of it as jewelry, given that the silk is likely to break down over time, but it’s a very neat concept nonetheless.

Here is another video of Duprat speaking about his work, including the caddis fly larvae.

Frances Wadsworth Jones Thieves Sapphire Ring

18k gold, sapphire and diamond ‘Thieves VII’ ring.

Things made by Frances Wadsworth-Jones are often not what they appear to be. What might look like a traditional ring at first glance turns out to have 18k gold ants looking like they are trying to make off with the gemstones. That collection is called ‘Thieves’ and is just one that is centered around a healthy dose of humor, which is just what the designer is going for. “Heaven Sent” is a series of brooches that are jewel encrusted bird droppings. The Royal College of Art grad lives and works out of London, visit her website at www.franceswadsworthjones.com

Bonhams April 15 Bulgari Yellow Diamond Ring

Bonhams kicked off spring auction week in New York with two sales on April 15. The first auction was a private collection that brought in US$2.6 million. The unidentified owner of the collection obviously enjoyed color and bold design, with a number of pieces coming from the world’s finest jewelers. My top three personal picks would have to be the 21.07 carat yellow diamond Bulgari ring (most expensive lot selling for $590,500, seen above), the 38.21 carat emerald Harry Winston bracelet (sold for $50,000) and the diamond encrusted Cartier ‘Maillon Panthère’ bracelet (sold for $86,500). Watch a video of the collection’s highlights here.

The second was the general Fine Jewelry auction that brought in a total of US$2.8 million. The top lots were two yellow diamond rings and one white diamond solitaire  Some interesting pieces up for grabs were a 1929 Mauboussin jade brooch (sold for $122,500), and a couple pieces by Albert Lipten that caught my eye for their striking design.

Princie Diamond

The highly anticipated sale at Christie’s in New York on April 16 has concluded with a total of US$81 million in sales. The showpiece ‘Princie Diamond’, a 34.65 carat pink diamond, was picked up by an anonymous phone bidder for US$39,323,750. This sets a house record for most expensive piece sold at Christie’s, although the world record honor remains with the Graff Pink at US$46 million.

Princie Diamond Angles My top three personal picks, purely for style, would start with a black and white art deco bracelet, circa 1925, with mine cut diamonds and black onyx details set in platinum. Perfect for the ‘Great Gatsby’ party you will inevitably be attending at some point this year, it sold for $43,750. Secondly would be a yellow diamond ring with emerald and white diamond accents. I love the way the emerald makes the yellow pop even more, and it manages to pull off what might be terribly cheesy. The nearly identical matching ear clips, however, I cannot say the same for. Funny how that works. The ring sold for $699,750. And finally, a spectacular William Goldberg diamond necklace. Because who would ever say no to owning this. It sold for a cool $1,859,750.

Sotheby’s wrapped up the auction week in New York with a sale on April 17th totalling $53 million. Top lot was the 74.79 carat pear-shaped D color diamond that sold for US$14,165,000. There were a few pieces worthy of checking out with the zoom function on the Sotheby’s website for their detail: an interesting yellow diamond necklace (lot 73), a bangle bracelet from Buccellati (lot 306) and a pink diamond ring (lot 184).

The Great Gatsby Movie StillA match made in heaven.

I’m sure I’m one of many who has been trying to wait patiently for Baz Luhrmann’s movie version of The Great Gatsby to come out. It’s set for release on May 10 and has unsurprisingly been getting a lot of attention from the design and fashion world for its opulent look and delicious period costumes. Carrie Mulligan’s Daisy Buchanan is dripping in Tiffany & Co. jewelry designed for the movie, which reflects the hallmarks of the Art Deco period. You can get your own piece of the magic as Tiffany’s has released a collection inspired by the movie.
